Donington Park delight for Adam Morgan and Dan Cammish
Ash Sutton remains on course to clinch a record-breaking fifth Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship title after maintaining his healthy advantage at the top of the standings during an action-packed visit to Donington Park this past weekend (August 22-23).
Making the second visit of the season to the East Midlands circuit - albeit this time to race on the longer Grand Prix layout - the UK’s premier motorsport spectacle delivered a trio of blockbuster encounters that were won by Adam Morgan and Dan Cammish.
NAPA Racing UK’s Sutton enjoyed another sublime outing behind the wheel of his Ford Focus Titanium, tallying two second-place finishes to extend his lead to an astonishing 98 points.
Like at Knockhill, Saturday belonged to the Mercedes-AMG A35 Saloon of Adam Morgan as he clinched a second successive Qualifying Race victory; which in-turn netted him a second pole position on the bounce.
Running under the CPRL banner, Morgan and team-mate Dan Rowbottom dominated a truncated 11-lap contest to lockout the front row by securing a remarkable one-two finish. Hanging on to their coattails to complete the top five was Josh Cook, Sutton and Cammish.
Sunday’s opening encounter saw Morgan then convert pole position into a second win of the season. Despite having to contend with two safety car appearances, the Lancashire racer kept his cool to dominate proceedings.
Behind him, Cook had looked on course to clinch second however a gear link issue scuppered his charge. His demise allowed Sutton to snatch yet another podium, while Gordon Shedden got the better of Rowbottom late on to secure third.
NAPA Racing UK’s Cammish - who this weekend was sporting a special one-off Valvoline livery - then came to the fore in race two to clinch his second win of the season.
Running the more preferable medium tyre, the Ford driver quickly moved forward and following a tussle with Rowbottom, he streaked clear to comfortably triumph ahead of Sutton and Ingram.
Race three then saw Morgan return to the winners’ circle as he completed what was arguably the best weekend of his touring car career by tallying yet another victory in the CPRL Mercedes.
Morgan harasses pole-sitter Chris Smiley as soon as the lights went out and took the lead on lap two after drawing alongside the Restart Racing driver through Schwartz Curve and into McLeans.
Once out front, the popular racer pulled clear with consummate ease while Aiden Moffat and Daryl De Leon delivered equally sublime drives to finish second and third respectively.
With just three events remaining, Sutton holds a commanding 98-point lead over Ingram while the trio of Cammish, Morgan and Ricky Collard complete the top five in the Drivers’ Championship.
As they have done since the very start of the season, Sutton’s Alliance Racing / Ford and NAPA Racing UK squad top both the Manufacturers’ / Constructors’ Championship and Teams’ Championship tables respectively.
Mikey Doble and LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing do the same in the Independents’ Trophy, whilst Dexter Patterson sits at the summit of the Jack Sears Trophy standings.
