Caterham Motorsport reign supreme north of the border at Knockhill

The British Automobile Racing Club and Caterham Motorsport delivered high-flying entertainment this past weekend (August 15-16) as four of the manufacturer’s five championships took centre stage at Knockhill.

Just a few days removed from the Motul Caterham Seven Championship UK having starred on the support bill of the British Touring Car Championship in Scotland, the picturesque venue opened its doors for more full-throttle entertainment from the iconic marque.

If that wasn’t enough, adding to the allure of the weekend’s travails was the fact that the Academy Championship, Roadsport Championship, Seven 270R Championship and Seven 310R Championship all raced in both directions around the 1.27-mile track.

Peter Holland proved to be the driver to beat in the Caffeine & Machine Caterham Academy Championship as he opened his account for the season by charging to a commanding brace of race wins.

William Mulholland had been the early pace-setter in the category for rookies drivers but his reign came to an end north of the border as Holland made his mark after missing out on pole position by just 0.016s in qualifying.

Holland fended off the advances of Benjamin Price-Stone and Barney Hussey-Yeo to win a frenetic opener, before then getting the better of Tim George and Phil McGovern in an even closer second encounter.

Over in the Bilstein Caterham Roadsport Championship - which is the second step on the Caterham Motorsport ladder - the battle for supremacy saw spoils be shared as Oliver Smith and Richard Davies tallied a win apiece.

Smith entered the weekend as the driver sitting at the top of the overall standings and he duly lived up to all front-running expectations by romping to victory in race one ahead of the aforementioned Davies and Mitchell Fasanya.

After coming within eight tenths of a second of victory in race one, Davies turned the tables in race two as he hit the front and then stretched his legs to build a gap. He would ultimately take the chequered flag by more than two seconds ahead of Smith and the impressive Kyle Townend.

Brian Thornton bolstered his own title aspirations as he emerged as the big winner in the FanDrive Caterham Seven 270R Championship, clinching two wins from the scheduled three races that were run over the course of the weekend.

Having come oh-so close to snaring pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session, Thornton reigned supreme by a remarkable 0.049s over Craig Evans in race one while Sebastian Tholet was a further two tenths of a second in arrears in third.

Tholet would star in an equally frenetic second race as he was the one to this time deny Evans to the top step of the podium. Thornton then returned to the throne in the weekend’s finale as he swept his way to victory ahead of Luciano Caruso and Tholet in race three.

Rounding out the action at Knockhill were a trio of races from the Vertex Caterham Seven 310R Championship that served up three different winners in the shape of William Harris, William Chadwick and Ryan Wilby.

Harris was the first to strike as he strengthened his championship challenge with a flawless triumph in race one before Chadwick, who is main rival for the crown, struck back with a win of his own in race two. Wilby then rounded things out with a superlative performance in the finale.
