About Heroes of FF1600 Sprint Cup

The Heroes of FF1600 Sprint Cup was created to celebrate one of the most important eras in grassroots single-seater racing. Launched in late 2023 and joining the BARC programme in 2024, the series was developed by racing driver Richard Tarling alongside Ian Temple and Steve Deeks.

The series focuses on pre-1993 Formula Ford 1600 cars, bringing the character of 1980s and 1990s single-seater racing back to UK circuits. With no aerodynamic wings, skinny tyres and 1600cc engines, the cars produce the lightweight, skittish and closely fought racing for which Formula Ford has long been known.

Formula Ford was created in Britain in 1967 as an affordable way for aspiring drivers to learn the fundamentals of single-seater racing. The first race took place on 2 July 1967, with cars initially powered by a 1498cc Ford Cortina engine before the formula evolved to use the 1600cc Ford Kent engine.

Over the decades, Formula Ford became one of the world's best-known single-seater categories and helped launch the careers of countless professional drivers. While newer engine formulas eventually replaced the Kent-powered cars at national level, FF1600 continues to thrive in historic and club racing today.
